OVERVIEW

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry delivered a historic performance in 2025, welcoming 2.36 million international visitors — a 15.1% year-on-year increase and the highest annual total in the country’s history, narrowly surpassing the previous record of ~2.33 million set in 2018. Tourism earnings exceeded US$3.2 billion, and December 2025 alone registered 258,928 arrivals — the strongest single month ever recorded. The SLTDA secured US$329 million in tourism-sector investments across 126 projects in 2025, and 4,600 new hotel rooms were added, bringing total registered capacity to over 58,000 rooms. With a free-visa scheme for 47 countries launching in Q1 2026 and a new national branding campaign underway, the trajectory to 3 million arrivals in 2026 and 5 million by 2030 is well-supported.
